Detours of Life

Detours might sound frightening, both in our daily life and within your personal inner world. Often, things can throw us off course, especially when it is in a land of the unknown.

However, this doesn't mean you should consider a detour, nor even a roadblock, as a bad thing or as something that keeps you off track or endangers your life and wellbeing.
Are your detours keeping you stuck? Healing with Solutions is here to help you become unstuck
There is a better way of embracing these things that sooner or later come into everybody's lives. It would be best to consider such an obstacle as something absolutely necessary and valuable so that you can gain a different perspective or insight.

Let me tell you about my impending detour to understand better the change in perspective and insight about my situation, which was an actual roadblock.
When Melbourne came out of lockdown, I immediately arranged to visit my Dad in Cohuna (Country Victoria). I made all these arrangements as an impulse without even realizing my intense need to escape city life and surrender myself in the arms of open country life. Even if it was just for one day as this was enough to feel freedom again.

After two and a half hours of driving, tunes cranking, all that remained was the last 40 minutes of driving to my desired destination. Or at least, this is what my mind was set upon. Then the eyeball roll in an unexpected surprise. Ahead were road signs indicating that roadworks were taking place. Generally, roadworks in regional areas often do not mean much as the work was either just completed or was finished a long time ago. Well, not this time. My mic drop moment: the direct route to Cohuna was fully closed due to a bridge upgrade, so now my usual, ordinary road to Cohuna was blocked.
Detours are both good and bad; it comes down to your perspective of how you view the situation.
The complication had just started. As there was no signage to say which way to reach my desired destination, it is expected to know where you were going simply by default. Let's not forget that phone reception in regional areas can be limited. So, imagine how much more lost you could actually get if you depend on GPS with no phone reception. What direction should you choose? Where to go? Before having the slightest idea where you're heading, you might find yourself stuck or way off track by an hour.
Luckily I knew which way to go. Since taking the turn to the right would have cost me at least an hour, I chose left. But, unfortunately, my choices were limited since the car I drove, a Toyota Yaris, was not appropriate for driving on muddy roads. So I could only do gravel or bitumen. And unfortunately, once you are off main roads, bitumen roads can be rare.

Thankfully, Mail Road saved me after only 5 minutes on the detour, which seemed more like 30 minutes. Bonus the chosen road was fully bitumen. So, in the end, my delay was just 15 minutes. And this was a small price to pay for some absolutely stunning scenery. Everything looked different from what I was used to. Nature felt impressive, different, and soothing. After all, it was lucky the roadblock was in place, so I gave thanks energetically to the local council for doing the bridge upgrade works as they gave me the chance to admire the beautiful scenery during this detour. There was one more thing that made me smile. Even in the middle of nowhere, I was still outside the city. The photos attached within this blog are from that day.

Anyway, the core idea of this blog is the detours from our predictable lives and the beauty of the unknown that shakes our everyday life. In my case here, the unknown consisted in not knowing the road conditions nor the extent of the detour. Plus, I didn't expect such a beautiful change in scenery. So you could call it a semi-unknown situation, as I knew, however, where I was heading.
It is time to connect with nature and breathe
But I am generalizing this situation to all life's detours. And my point is also applicable for all the moments when you feel caught like a mouse endlessly running on the hamster wheel without ever moving away from the same spot.

So, here is your easy and efficient solution for detours or roadblocks appearing in your life. I present you with a simple breathing technique, useful for the moments when you feel taken off-track. Just follow these easy steps:
  1. Place one of your hands over your heart and the other one on your stomach.
  2. Breath slowly, consciously in and out. I recommend you to breathe like this for a minimum of ten full breaths.
  3. Focus all your attention on your breathing rhythm.
  4. While inhaling and exhaling, take notice of your hands' movement as they rise and fall with your chest and stomach.
  5. Keep on focusing only on the breath until you have completed your ten full breaths.

Now observe your attitude towards an impending detour or roadblock after doing this meditation. Did anything change compared to your attitudes before this?

Let me know how you feel after doing this short meditation?
Long drives equal tranquility and freedom
This breathing method and meditation are part of my integrative healing solutions. The principle of this is that when your full attention is directed to your breath, your stress levels decrease, you connect with yourself in all areas, thus improving your mental and physical health.

There is a sea of breathing techniques out there; I prefer to choose the simplest ones because they are the most efficient, especially when time is limited or the stress levels are high. After that, it is about choosing what works the best for you.

No matter what you do next, please focus on observing what the roadblocks are trying to tell you. So is it to; focus on your breathe, go for a walk, or sit in nature. For example, I sometimes take a shower and imagine that I am are standing under a waterfall.
Always remember that life might surprise you in unimaginable ways if you don't avoid life detours and roadblocks.

I can totally relate to this! Every street around our house right now is FULL of roadworks, orange cones and detour signs (because it's Summer here Canada) and for road planners and road workers Winter and snow are always looming, just around the corner, so they are working around the clock to redo roads, gardens, gutters and footpaths, so the detours and roadblocks are everywhere, making us all adjust our plans, they slow us down and force us to use our brains or change our habits, or even change the way we travel to the destination, and by doing that we have the opportunity to accept the detour as a positive or a negative; we get to see new scenery, to realise how precious time is, to learn how to react or act, to learn how to breathe, to get angry or to be happy, or to find a new way of getting there. :)
