If you answered yes to any of these, you may have a misperception about yourself. Some of these misperceptions start when we take no action to change them. By taking no action, all this does is lead to living an unfulfilled life of denial, self-doubt, depression, missed opportunities or, even worse, regrets.
A way to overcome your misperceptions about yourself is to "upcycle your mindset" - which is when you allow and give yourself permission to implement and accept change. This may reduce, eliminate, and diminish stress, feelings of being overwhelmed, doubt, worry and anxiety from your life.
At a Queensland Government event, Advancing Women in Small Business, 59% of the women in attendance listed stress, self-doubt, and confidence as their number one challenge.
If stress, self-doubt or a lack of confidence is your number one challenge in your life, isn't it way past time to "upcycle your mindset"?
The definition of "upcycle" is: to reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original.
Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy! - Dale Carnegie
I have a saying: "1% doubt turns into 99% doubt". This means that if we doubt, question, fear or worry ourselves even by a small amount (the 1%), we tend to turn this into something much more significant (the 99%). It is at this point we feel more stress, anxiety and or fear.
I once doubted my ability to be loved by a partner, so I thought it would be clever for me to test his love. At the time he couldn't say how he felt. I would continuously put myself down in front of him to see if he would bring me back up. He did not. And I wasn't surprised when he didn't.
In short, I naively believed that I was in control of what I was saying and that by stating the negative and false misperceptions of myself out loud to him, I was doing no harm to myself. Boy, was I completely wrong!
Thankfully, the relationship did end. Once hindsight kicked in, I realised all I had done was create an extremely negative and a disruptive re-wiring of my thoughts, and actions. Worse still, I believed in them, resulting in a lack of confidence and self-worth, self-doubt and mild depression.
Due to this experience (which I am now thankful for), I understand and respect how powerful and disruptive thoughts can be and why it is crucial to replace false misperceptions about yourself sooner rather than later. To rectify and reverse the effects of the damage I had done, I gave myself permission to change my misperceptions and upcycled my mindset by seeking help from a range of holistic and naturopathic healers. Because of this experience, I decided to become an energy healer and completed Reiki level 2.
Perceptions can be, and often are, false and deceptive, however real they may appear to us. It is proved not by extraneous evidence but in the transformed conduct and character of those who have felt the real presence of God within.
- Mahatma Gandhi
The essential steps to an upcycled mindset are:
Become aware of your thoughts and actions.
Ask yourself whether, what you are doing or saying is serving you.
Choose one thing on which to implement change and focus on that.
Allow yourself to commit to taking action, on the one thing you want to implement change.
Congratulate yourself at every step along the way - as we all do better with positive reinforcement!
Most importantly, be gentle with yourself and take your time.
My question to you is:
By correcting and upcycling the misperceptions you have about yourself regarding your thoughts and actions within your life, your confidence will rise. You will become happier, and the worry and anxiety you have will be either reduced, diminished or eliminated. It may even bring about a career change (which was the case for me)!
