In spiritual well-being, misperceptions are basically a negative perception that you have created about yourself and the world around you, which is not true or real. These misperceptions will have a profound effect on your emotions and experiences. A belief can be seen as either positive or negative: Negative belief: I will never succeed. I always get it wrong. I don't deserve love. Positive belief: I am a work in progress. I am capable and competent. I am loved. Both these examples are a common part of the human psyche. However, this article focuses on the negative impact that false misperceptions have on your life. Hence, it is essential to have these corrected as they affect just about every aspect you experience in life. These false perceptions influence you in ways that are not always easy to recognise as the fabricated negative ideas become your reality and integrate within your thoughts. It transcends every function of your being - mental, emotional, and physical. When a misperception manifests, you end up believing you are:
Left unchecked, negative misperceptions rewires your mental perception so that it creates a false reality. Meaning you end up living an altered, pretty screwed up version of real life. Ultimately, your true beliefs are then replaced by negative untrue beliefs. Over time, negative misperception becomes integrated into your entire being and ingrained into your current way of thinking. Consequently, the misperception morphs into deep unresolved beliefs (DUBs). This transformation prevents you from living the life you truly desire and, quite rightly, deserve. DUBs serve no purpose. These unresolved beliefs prevent you from realising your true potential and only hold you back. The negative impact of DUBs can manifest in several ways:
Once you have identified a misperception in your thinking, you need to ask the following questions:
Before you can resolve a DUB, you need to realise that it exists. In my personal journey, the realisation came when I allowed a very dear photographer friend to take some photos of me. Initially, I felt uncomfortable, stiff, and awkward. I was unsure of myself and insecure. Despite all this, I actually enjoyed the experience. It was fun because my friend created a safe environment. When I viewed the images, I did not like the person I saw, which was completely unexpected. Yes, the person in the photo was me. Yet, I saw myself as unhappy, not pretty, dull and dorky, but I knew this wasn’t what other people saw in me. This seemingly insignificant event triggered a self-discovery path that would allow me to become my true self. So I began the process of upcycling my mindset. This was a journey of self-improvement—a process of learning to love and respect myself as I knew I had to correct the DUBs and the misperceptions. I suppose you could say I began to recreate myself as I really am. Not the false identity that I assumed, simply because the way I viewed myself was not as I actually am. Fifteen years have passed since that enlightening moment. I remain eternally grateful for the experience. Modelling for the camera gave me an external view of who I am. I highly recommend it. Through the lens of the camera, I was able to see how I looked and how I felt. My posture and disposition became clear, and it said a lot about me and how I felt about myself—even the clothes I wore, what worked and what didn’t look so good. It provided a holistic view of my inner and outer self. Above all, it allowed me to learn self-acceptance. To see who I am and embrace that person with love, respect, and trust. Now for the big questions that you need to ask yourself with complete honesty:
If you answered yes to any of the questions, it’s time to find the answers. Identifying these needs means that you need to take the first step on a journey toward changing your misperception. It really is no different to upcycling your mindset:
In the midst of changing a misperception, it may seem difficult, even impossible, to reach these goals. The false perceptions and DUBs obscure your ability to see things as they really are.
